China's manufacturing industry increased production for the 14th straight month in April as domestic demand skyrocketed. According to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, the the Purchasing Managers' Index, or PMI, stood at 55.7 percent in April, up 0.6 percentage points from last month.

A reading above 50 percent indicates economic expansion, while below 50 percent indicates contraction. Zhang Liqun, a researcher with the State Council's Development Research Center, says the April's growth was largely seasonal as the index has previously been high in March and April over past years. He noted uncertainties still remain in the growth of exports and domestic demand, both of which were partly buoyed by the government stimulus programs and had yet to enter a continuous growth trajectory.
